Physiotherapists have a central role in treating incontinence which can be more pronounced during pregnancy. After a detailed assessment, you will be taught exercises to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles, along with other techniques to retrain the bladder, lifestyle changes and advice to promote and maintain continence. You may also be asked to maintain a voiding diary and give details of your general medical history.
Pain, in particular backache, during pregnancy can be alleviated by physiotherapy. Treatments include manual therapy by the physio, instruction in correct manual handling and also the provision of support aids such as belts.
